Emergency Dentistry Q & A

What is emergency dentistry?

Emergency dentistry is an area of dental practice focused on addressing acute dental needs. You can encounter an urgent dental issue any time of day or night, and having a trusted dental team to turn to can make it easier to know how to respond.

Many dental issues need to be treated as quickly as possible, especially when your goal is to save a damaged tooth. Some dental problems can also be incredibly painful, and emergency dentistry can get you on a path to relief as quickly as possible.

If you’re unsure whether emergency dentistry is the right treatment setting for your needs, consider whether you can comfortably wait to be seen during a routinely scheduled dental visit. If the answer is no, emergency dentistry is probably the right approach.

What kinds of problems can be treated in emergency dentistry?

Any damage to your teeth, gums tissue, or other soft oral tissues can be addressed in an emergency dentistry setting. Some of the more common issues that result in an emergency dental appointment include:

  • Cracked or broken tooth
  • Knocked-out (avulsed) tooth
  • Object lodged in gum tissue
  • Lacerations to your tongue, gums, or other soft oral tissues
  • Lost filling or crown
  • Severe dental pain
  • Signs of infection
  • Swelling or pain in your jaw

If you’re uncertain if your dental issue is a true emergency, call Advanced & Comfort Dentistry to explain your symptoms and learn what your next steps should be.

What should I do if I lose a permanent tooth?

A knocked-out tooth, also called an avulsed tooth, is one of the most common dental emergencies. Knowing how to respond can make the difference between saving and losing the tooth.

Begin by locating your tooth and picking it up, taking care to avoid touching the root portion, or any part of the tooth that would normally be covered by your gums. The root of your tooth is covered in a layer of living cells, and damaging those cells can make reimplantation impossible.

If there is dirt or debris on the tooth, rinse it quickly under a gentle stream of clean water. If possible, place the tooth back into its socket, and bite down gently on a piece of gauze or clean cloth to hold it in place.

You can also place the tooth in the space between your cheek and gums. This will keep it moist and in a familiar environment while you seek treatment. Alternatively, place the tooth in a small volume of warm milk and bring it to the office with you.

When you need emergency dental care, call Advanced & Comfort Dentistry to determine when you can come in for treatment. Less time-sensitive booking needs can be done easily through the online booking page.
